2010 Innovation Celebration

Tim Hoerr, CEO of Serra Ventures, was the keynote speaker at the fifth annual 2010 Innovation Celebration on February 25th. This annual event is sponsored by the Champaign County Economic Development Corporation, The University of Illinois Office of Technology Management, Corporate Relations, The Research Park and Enterprise Works, in order to recognize individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions, taken risks, and provided leadership to ensure the continuing economic success of Champaign County. In addition, this event celebrates the ongoing success of the University’s economic development mission, and the growth of entrepreneurial talent and energy in your community.

Innovation Celebration is not merely an award for accomplishment, but a benchmark of success for those outstanding individuals, organizations and corporations who are nominated and selected to receive this prestigious award. Additionally, Innovation Celebration serves as a tangible collaboration between the University of Illinois and the community that clearly establishes the power of cooperation and united vision.

Tim Hoerr currently serves as the chairman of the Champaign County Economic Development Corporation.  In 2009, he was the winner of the Entrepreneurial Excellence in Management Award at the Innovation Celebration Event.

2010 Invention to Venture

Tim Hoerr, CEO of Serra Ventures, was the featured speaker at the 2010 Invention to Venture event sponsored by the Technology Entrepreneurship Center at the University of Illinois http://www.invention2venture.org/urbana10/. Invention to Venture workshops offer numerous resources to attendees, the two main assets being the opportunity to gain practical information and to create networking opportunities. This particular event was a one-day workshop which focused on the basics of technology entrepreneurship and was aimed not only at college and university students, but was also open to all individuals interested in entrepreneurship.

The presentations included the topics of venture capital, marketing, intellectual property, and business plans, all of which Tim has extensive experience with. Tim presented “The Perfect Business Plan, Slide Show and Elevator Pitch” in which he highlighted a variety of tips for effectively selling business ideas. Speakers chosen for this event were drawn from the local region and were brought in as experts within their given fields. The presenters inspire action along with practical methods for taking ideas to commercialization.

Tim Hoerr served on the panel “Finding the Money,” which was a panel presentation on creative ways to finance start-up businesses including SBIR/STTR grant funding, corporate partnering, SBA bank financing, angel funding and venture capital funding. Tim has also been a featured speaker at several past Invention to Venture events.
